Future updates are expected to support controller and cloud storage. Let's see if anything has changed in this Remastered version.
What Is Remastered?
I have to explain a bit before we go on. Remastered, like Remake, also means redesign a game. However, unlike a complete remake of the game's content, the Remastered only remade the visuals to suit the technology of that time. That means Final Fantasy VIII Remastered will keep the same storyline, character lines, and gameplay, only upgrade the graphics, resolution, and visual and animation-related elements.
The Original Storyline
The world of Final Fantasy has always attracted many veteran players thanks to the perfect combination of science fiction and mysterious magic. Final Fantasy VIII Remastered, the first remake of this legendary series, will retain the plot of the original version released 20 years ago.
The game is about a group of mercenaries, led by Squall Leonhart, a talented and handsome leader but with a slightly peculiar personality. During a battle, they accidentally encounter Ultimecia, a mysterious witch from the future.
She wanted to compress time to take over all of humanity's past and future, a plan that couldn't be more "fictional.” In order to oppose Ultimecia's ambitious goal, Squall and his comrades desperately fought and won with all their heart and courage.
A good story cannot leave out the romantic element. On his journey against evil, Squall meets his sweetheart, Rinoa Heartilly - a beautiful and talented girl. Fortunately, unlike most other RPGs with traumatic love stories, Final Fantasy VIII Remastered has a happy ending. I guess I don't have to say anything, right? That passionate kiss at the end will surely make you jealous.
The turn-based RPG gameplay is familiar to all versions of Final Fantasy. And this gameplay is probably not too strange to today's players. You will collect characters for your team and build a complete squad. In each chapter, you will meet a certain character as an NPC. They will eventually return to your team at the end of the chapter. Just like that, you will build the best team for yourself.
It is also impossible not to mention the equipment system for the character. You can collect them through quests, battles, and events. Along the way, monsters will rush to you if they see your appearance. You can dodge, but if you touch them, you will be forced to join the fight. Defeating them will definitely drop items, but whether it is good or not must be based on your luck.
Junction is a feature featured in Final Fantasy VIII. This system allows players to equip GF and store magic on characters to increase their power. You need to collect GFs to be able to supply all of your characters.
What’s New In the Remastered Version?
In this version, the publisher focuses mainly on GF. For each character, you can assign their own GF so that they can attack in a smarter way. When assigned a GF, the character can use skills such as casting spells or summoning.
Not only that, each GF has its own unique and valuable abilities that you can take advantage of, such as turning enemies into cards, forging items, increasing stats, etc. Therefore, this is one of the game’s core elements, and collecting enough GF is also an outstanding achievement for each player.
It can be said that it is rare to see any games that the publisher himself integrates "cheat" into the gameplay. In this version, you will be provided with three cheats available. You can flexibly turn it on / off at any time. They are also helpful in general, but too much abuse will lose the appeal of this game.
Combat Support: Maximize HP and ATB in battle and activate Limit Break at any time.
Battle Encounter: you can glide through monsters without having to start a battle.
Triple Speed Boost: Except for certain cutscenes, players can choose to continue the game at 3x the speed.
Audio and Graphics
Since this is the Remastered version, the image will definitely be sharper than the original Final Fantasy VIII. The scenes are also anti-aliased and slightly smoothed, along with the character's sharp treatment.
However, if you look closely, the surface texture’s detail is almost unchanged compared to the version. If you are familiar with the game with attractive graphics like Epic Conquest 2 or Tales of Wind, Final Fantasy VIII Remastered graphics will surely surprise you.
